Trams rides and threads

I have fabric shopping down to a fine art. The key is to arrive knowing exactly what you want. Otherwise, the beautiful fabrics and notions can have you browsing for hours and spending all your pennies on handsome buttons and lace rather than the fabric you actually need... (something i've fallen prey to more times than i'd care to admit)

Other than the occasional inner tears when I can't find the fabric I need, I really enjoy visiting fabric stores. The staff are always really friendly and love talking to me about the latest period drama on television, which is kind of funny as I don't even have a television but usually end up rushing home and downloading all their recommendations. This is how I discovered Downton Abbey!

I love how Oliver manages to make something that seems so mundane to me look so beautiful, I can't tell you how many times i've hurried past walls of embroidery thread and not so much as glanced their way.

Lastly I wanted to say a big thank you to Ale of Rosaspina Vintage, in her latest post she models one of the custom dresses I made for Audrey Grace Boutique and looks absolutely lovely. Seeing ladies in my dresses makes my heart sing.

Tumblr Inspiration - 1920s Erotica

I've been on a bit of a tumblr kick lately and thought i'd share some of my very favourite 1920s erotica photographs. The vintage lingerie, bobbed hair and cheeky poses drive me crazy. I plan on recreating most of these outfits, I already spend most of my home time lounging around in vintage slips and silky tap pants so I guess all I need now is a pair of lacy bloomers with the derriere cut out...

Come Sail Your Ships Around Me

Photographs by Montclare

While taking a driving lesson this past Wednesday in one of Melbourne's notorious heat waves we decided to stop off at the beach for a dip. After almost 4 years of living in Melbourne this is the second time we've been swimming, the first was two summers ago when the temperature was pushing 55C... It felt amazing to have salty skin and a beachy bob once again!

Last night I caught up with Josie after months of us being tied to our respective sewing machines. Her boyfriend and housemate Sarah cooked the most amazing Japanese feast, complete with Sake and Miso. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! It was so wonderful to see her new home, amazing sewing room and the beautiful dresses she's working on for Frances Baker. If you haven't seen her new collection do yourself a favour and check it out, so much beauty!

Also I wanted to mention that in preparation for the big move I am selling most of my life on ebay. I've listed plenty of vintage dresses, shoes, bathing suits and even seamed stockings so be sure to have a peek here.

Shop Update: Polka Dots and Circle Skirts

I've just listed some new dresses in the shop. All dresses are either one of a kind or of a very small run so get in quick! I'll be adding small 3-4 new dresses per week, I am lovely being able to utilise my extensive fabric stash after many months of neglect!

I'm thinking I need more red polka dots in my life, after swishing around in Minnie for a while I was positively giddy with glee!

Warm Summer Nights

The past fortnight has been filled with dreamy summer nights in the city, cafe hopping, apartment packing, dancing till my feet near fell off and giggly sleepovers.

I've been trying to capture day to day life on disposable cameras. I love how grainy and old the photographs look, plus I feel like i'm 11 all over again which isn't such a bad thing. Looking at these pictures is filling me with Melbourne nostalgia, but film always makes me feel that way.
I did have another disposable camera that was doing the rounds but after one too many champagnes it somehow ended up in the toilet... Still not quite sure how that happened.

I hope everyone is having a smashing weekend, i'm off to shoot some new dresses!

Coming to America

After months of applications, interviews and anxious anticipation my U.S. working visa has been approved! So on April the 9th Oliver and I will be waving farewell to Australia and hello to California. We will be spending 3 months on the road travelling from the West Coast to the East Coast and stopping everywhere in between. In July we will be settling in New York until April next year. It is unbelievable how everything has fallen into place, I feel constantly giddy with excitement!

Sadly this means that I will be shutting up shop early April, if you've been eyeing off a dress now is the time to snap it up. I will be adding plenty of one of a kind numbers made with vintage fabric in the coming weeks, I have such a handsome collection of fabrics which I am determined to make use of before departing. I have been overwhelmed with the support i've received since opening my online store in 2010 and cannot thank everyone enough! I am really looking forward to taking some time off to find new inspiration and direction for my little label.

For anyone living in America I would love to hear any suggestions of places that should not be missed! Better yet if anyone would like to catch up please feel free to drop me a line at katielouiseford@gmail.com

Room with a View

Photographs by Mont Clare

Sometimes my back garden resembles an enchanted Labrinyth. Other days it looks more like a freshly shorn sheep. I am filled with sadness when I awake to chainsaws and hedge trimmers, why can't they just let things grow? On a good day if I look out of my bedroom window on a certain angle, I can't see any other houses only over gown hedges and towering trees. I focus all of my attention on that view and pretend i'm living the dream in an English countryside manor...... It's only a matter of time.

The Devil Does Care

Photographs c/o Ferry Photography via Dette Ede

Once again my darling friend Dette Ede has blown my mind. This collection was created for The Spindle Sideshow 2011 and would have to be my very favourite yet. Delicate silk dresses and skirts adorned with hand embellished artwork of skeletal systems and organs seem a little terrifying in theory, but she manages to make them a thing of great beauty. I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for this talented gal.

The first time I saw Dette I was slaving away in fashion school, I caught a glimpse of her kewpie doll face and thought "Woooah what a babe, I wish I could be friends with her!". A week later she asked me on a lady date and we have been giggling and drinking wine ever since.

You can see more of her amazing creations over at Dette Ede, she is currently working on an online shop which will be opening in the coming months. Hellllllo skeleton dress, you will be mine!

Like a Man

Photographs by Montclare

I am incredibly envious of my other half's wardrobe, particularly this amazing vintage wool military coat and felt fedora... If the coat didn't threaten to swallow me whole I would definitely be taking it out on the town. The quality of male clothing never ceases to surprise me, not to mention the practicality. SO many spacious pockets for keeping trinkets and treats!

This week has been a challenging one as I am currently learning how to drive. For some reason driving never appealed to me as a teen, I was far too busy listening to the Cure in my bedroom and teasing my hair in an attempt to look like Robert Smith. So now, rather than learning in a sleepy beachside town I am learning in a busy city, which I think will be all for the best in the long run. With 3 driving lessons in 24 hours I went from barely grasping the concept of steering and being the victim of road rage to driving home on a busy main road... very chuffed indeed!

Also I believe this is the first time Oliver has made an appearance on my blog, huzzaah! I'm pretty lucky to have such a talented man by my side, he takes most of the photo's for my blog, cuts my bob perfectly every time and makes a mean cup of tea (said tea is being consumed as I type this) You can see more of his beautiful photography over at his blog Montclare
