Underneath It All

This post was initially a response to a rather snarky comment left on my blog saying how scary I'd look without makeup. So here you go. Fresh out of the shower, makeup free and absolutely terrifying.

I've never felt like a natural beauty and have always preferred how I look when wearing makeup. It suits the clothing I wear and makes me feel pretty fancy. Without the stylised makeup I look like a fairly normal lady, because I am. I get breakouts and have eye bags and a pesky hair that grows on my chin. I'm not in anyway precious about it, at the end of the day when I crawl into bed this is what I look like. Warts and all.

Since then I've had a few more personalised attacks regarding the content of my posts. My life has been a whirlwind of change over the past year and I'm sure anyone that has been following along for awhile now is aware of that. My life and style is evolving and that is reflected through my blog/instagram. Unfortunately I can't please everyone. If you feel my posts are distasteful please feel free to unfollow, easy as pie.

  1. I'm surprised to hear that you would get attacked by anyone. I've always loved your posts and pictures because you always seem so genuine, fun, and have a great spirit for life. This bums me out to hear people talking smack to you. Please don't listen because you have always been amazing and continue to be - brunette / blonde / red-head doesn't matter!

  3. Internet bullys make me so angry!!!
Your beautiful even all natural, and very brave for doing so on the net, I wish I could face people with your grace and dignity.

  4. Pffftttt you are beautiful without makeup. Seriously. You don't even look that much different - you truly are a natural beauty. Bullies are bullies - we all get attacked sooner or later. It's better than getting creeps ahahahah :p And you've got Tim to protect you from bullies! We must always surround ourselves with people who love us :)

  5. The world is lucky you've chosen to share yourself at all. So of course you can do and wear and say whatever you'd like, of course, of course! But gosh, what is there even to complain about? And for the record, you are lovely with and without makeup!

  6. Darling you had absolutely no need to justify yourself remotely! Even though you did so eloquently and with grace. Your beauty is your own. Your style is your own. Why do we allow faceless words from a screen to affect us so deeply. I don't understand, and I am glad I don't because it would mean I might be like them, why grown adults still conduct themselves with such playground antics. In a world so vast and diverse individualism and uniqueness is a wonderful breath of air. We are, on the other hand, never too grown to grow personally and explore new areas in our lives and develop our personalities. You are beautiful avec make up and you are beautiful sans make up! I adore watching your uniqueness please ignore the twisted haters who sit behind their screens dishing out typed bullying believing that their words will have no effect on you. J'dore

  7. You are my favorite and you are absolutely enviable without makeup, don't listen to silly people who tell you otherwise. xoxoxoxoxo!

  8. You are lovely on the outside, and you seem just as lovely on the outside. What makes you feel good is all that matters.

  9. How lovely and fresh-faced - perfect with or without makeup! And may I say, you have gorgeous eyebrows. (I was a blonde child with invisible eyebrows - still not very visible - so my beauty standard has always been about eyebrows. They frame the face, after all)!

It is vital that artists/bloggers/people-in-general evolve. Sensible people should understand this.

I wish you all the best!

  10. OH MY GOSH .... just terrifying. You look like a person. I personally love your photos...especially your more risque ones that's where I curse you (in my head) ... 4 kids later my body does not look like that.

We are constantly bombarded with images of "perfect" women models/celebrities/bloggers....almost all of them retouched....no one can stand up to that standard, not even the models themselves. I also find in the "vintage" community so many people look identical. You stand out for being you. You are gorgeous. You are also your own person. You get to decide whether or not to wear makeup or cut your hair a certain way or dress a certain way.

As Katherine Hepburn once said "If you always do what interests you, at least one person is pleased."

Sorry you have to put up with other peoples objectifications...as a fat person I am used to people commenting on my appearance and I know it's rough. ((((hugs))) stay perfect - stay YOU.

  13. You go, girl!!! I find you quite a stunner without make up on, really, but that's just me. I'm pretty glad to see you react in such a mature and positive way to stupid people, I shut down one blog because of cyberbullying a while ago. People are disgusting enough to post comments inventing that my make up choices were due to getting beat up by my husband and my son - who is only five - and I wore dark eye make up to hide the bruises... so, yay, I'm glad you respond to trolls in such a beautiful way!!!

  14. So beautiful! You should never feel the need to justify yourself to anyone! As long as you feel beautiful then no one else's opinion will ever matter. I find it so strange when people feel the need to diss blog styles/ content etc when they are quite clearly spending so much time reading them. They are just bully's take offence to women with confidence because they probably don't have much of their own. That's very sad really. You are a beaut Katie, Gwen would be proud. ;) xxx

  17. My first thought was "how can anyone say that, you look so normal (In the most positive way, you know)" but that's the thing isn't it, bullies don't care how you look or who you are as long as they can get satisfaction out of belittling you! But you do look absolutely stunning both with and without makeup! and I so enjoy seeing both yours and Tim's pictures on instagram:D Have a great sunday!

Cheers to being comfortable enough in your own skin.
    Pity the envious lost souls.

  22. To my eyes you're very beautiful with & without make up. I don't know what it is with blogs, do readers feel a sort of ownership over the persona of the author? 'This is what I have imagined you to be, so God forbid don't change.' I think people become interested, a tiny bit invested in a bloggers successes and failures and then maybe they think they have the right to start telling bloggers what to post. It's a curious thing.

  26. Handled with class! I am sorry to hear people have been so horrible to you. It's bullying, and pathetic. Please don't take it to heart. That one horrible comment left by "Anon" was clearly left by someone jealous and threatened. Keep on rockin'!

  27. Hi Katie. You write and post your gorgeous blog for those who seek and love you (I am an avid lurker). Nobody is forced to read your blog. Please continue to portrait yourself as you see yourself and don't be put off by trolls whose only aim is to cause distress. One of my dearest friends was a victim of such evil minded individuals. She ended up changing her email and ore-editing the comments before they went up on the blog. On top of that she did t engage with the trolls and they very quickly lost interest ! Please keep in posting your beautiful, artistic and inspirational photos and comments!
